Adani Enterprises Launches Operations at Mundra Copper Refinery

Adani Enterprises has initiated operations at its greenfield copper refinery project in Mundra through its subsidiary, Kutch Copper. This development marks Adani’s strategic entry into the metal industry and underscores the group’s commitment to leading in large-scale ventures.

The project, which saw its first dispatch of cathodes to customers, signifies the commencement of operations at this advanced facility. Adani Enterprises has invested approximately USD 1.2 billion in the initial phase of the project. The goal is to establish a copper smelter with a capacity of 0.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The completion of a second phase, which will duplicate the capacity of the first, aims to position Kutch Copper’s facility as the world’s largest single-location custom smelter. The facility is noted for its state-of-the-art technology, digitalization, and adherence to the highest environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, emphasized the importance of this venture for the company’s portfolio and India’s sustainable and self-reliant future. He highlighted the project’s swift execution as evidence of Adani’s commitment to elevating India’s position in the global copper sector. Adani also stressed the crucial role of the domestic copper industry in achieving India’s carbon neutrality goal by 2070, through support for green infrastructure and environmental stewardship.

The copper smelter is expected to meet the rising demand for copper, fueled by the growth of renewable energy, electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and power transmission networks. Additionally, Kutch Copper plans to further integrate its operations by establishing Kutch Copper Tubes Limited, focusing on the production of copper tubes for air conditioning and refrigeration applications. icon
