Ryan Melsert, CEO of American Battery Technology (NASDAQ: ABAT), recently spoke with Benzinga about the company’s latest milestones, the state of the lithium market, and its role as a critical supplier for the green energy sector. Melsert highlighted the company’s balanced approach to working with retail investors and strategic partners, which has been crucial in its recent growth.
American Battery Technology operates across three key areas: battery recycling, metal manufacturing, and resource development. Melsert detailed the company’s progress, noting that their first commercial battery recycling facility is fully operational, producing and selling significant quantities of recycled battery-grade products. The company has also partnered with BASF, one of North America’s largest battery metals customers, to enhance its recycling efforts.
In addition to recycling, American Battery Technology is focused on developing lithium resources within the U.S., particularly sedimentary claystone. The company has secured government grants to build a pilot plant and a commercial-scale refinery to extract and process lithium, a critical component for batteries. Melsert emphasized the importance of balancing battery manufacturing with recycling to avoid future issues with waste management.
Melsert also discussed the entry of major oil companies into lithium production, noting that their expertise in chemical processing could benefit the industry. He mentioned ongoing engagements with the U.S. government and the importance of permit reform to accelerate domestic resource development.
Looking ahead, Melsert emphasized the significance of forming strategic partnerships with battery manufacturers and vehicle OEMs, which will be crucial as the company continues to scale its operations.
