Amplats Acknowledges Oversight in Verifying Former Board Member’s Qualifications

Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) has officially addressed the controversy surrounding the qualifications of Thabi Leoka, a former board member who resigned in January. The resignation followed allegations that Leoka misrepresented her academic credentials, specifically claiming to possess a PhD that she did not hold.

In its recent annual report, Amplats conceded that it failed to conclusively verify Leoka’s qualifications prior to her board and committee appointments. While an initial verification process was conducted, which confirmed all of Leoka’s qualifications except for her PhD, the company admitted that the verification of her PhD was still pending at the time she was interviewed and that they regrettably did not follow up on this matter.

The platinum giant has since revised its governance processes to ensure that complete verification reports are reviewed by the nomination committee as part of the candidate evaluation process. Leoka’s departure from the board on January 19, 2024, was attributed to personal health concerns and the scrutiny over her academic qualifications.

This incident has prompted broader discussions about the due diligence practices of corporate boards in South Africa. Leoka’s claimed PhD from the London School of Economics was also cited in her roles with other prominent organizations, including MTN SA and the presidential economic advisory council, both of which have ended their association with her.

Amplats outlined its three-step director appointment process, emphasizing the role of the nomination committee and the use of executive search firms to vet candidates. The process is designed to ensure that board candidates meet specified criteria, including verifying academic and professional credentials. icon
