Anglo American Collaborates with GEM on Breakthrough EV Battery Technology

Mining giant Anglo American has embarked on a strategic R&D project in partnership with GEM, one of China’s leading battery and battery material recyclers. The joint initiative aims to pioneer innovative technologies for the utilization of existing and alternative raw materials in electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

Paul Ward, Executive Head of Base Metals Marketing at Anglo American, highlighted the company’s commitment to the long-term decarbonization of the transport sector, responsible for over 15% of global emissions. The collaboration with GEM focuses on leveraging Anglo’s diverse portfolio of critical products to address industry challenges and contribute to the sustainable expansion of EV travel.

The core objective of the R&D project is to jointly develop metal dissolving technologies utilizing key metals such as nickel, cobalt, and manganese. This innovation aims to enhance the efficiency of battery material utilization, whether sourced from mining or recycled routes. The project not only seeks to optimize existing processes but also explores the integration of new materials not currently part of the battery value chain.

Anglo American’s collaboration with GEM aligns with the company’s broader vision of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. As a global mining powerhouse with roots in South Africa, Anglo recognizes the need to transition away from fossil fuels. This initiative reflects the company’s dedication to meeting the expectations of investors, regulators, and environmentalists by leveraging its expertise in green metals crucial for global decarbonization efforts.

Xu Kaihua, Founder and Chair of GEM, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, marking a crucial step for GEM. With over two decades of experience in battery and electronics recycling, GEM aims to synergize with industry leaders like Anglo American, contributing to the critical raw materials value chain. The shared commitment to technological advancement underscores the common goal of shaping a more sustainable future for the transport sector.

While electric vehicles have made strides in reducing environmental impact, they are yet to reach critical mass in sales across many countries. Anglo American’s collaboration with GEM is a strategic move as the company navigates the pressures to transition away from fossil fuels. The mining giant remains at the forefront of supporting the hydrogen economy and advocating the broader adoption of fuel cell electric vehicles, aligning with its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. icon
