In a recent development that could have significant implications for the global copper market, China’s premier copper smelters have proposed substantial production cuts. This decision comes in response to a sharp decline in the treatment charges for copper concentrate over the past few months, according to three sources acquainted with the situation.
During a meeting convened by the China Smelters Purchase Team (CSPT) this Friday, the smelters also suggested establishing a minimum threshold for copper treatment charges at $50 per metric ton. This move aims to stabilize the market and ensure the sustainability of smelting operations amidst the challenging environment of dwindling raw material supplies.
