CMOC has announced significant increases in its copper and cobalt production for the first quarter of the year. The Chinese mining company, operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo, reported copper production of 147,500 metric tons and cobalt production of 25,200 tons in the first three months.
The company’s Tenke Fungurume Mining site recently expanded its capacity, now capable of producing up to 450,000 tons of copper and 37,000 tons of cobalt annually. This expansion has elevated TFM to one of the world’s top ten copper mines.
Following the resolution of a dispute with the Congo’s state miner last April, CMOC has intensified its production and export activities. Last year, the company’s cobalt production reached 55,526 tons, overtaking Glencore as the leading global cobalt producer.
For the first quarter, copper sales surged to 125,500 tons, and cobalt sales increased to 243,000 tons. Looking ahead, CMOC has projected its 2024 copper production to be between 520,000 and 570,000 tons, up from 419,539 tons in the previous year.
