CMOC has entered into a cooperation agreement with Lualaba Power of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to accelerate the development of the Nzilo II hydropower project. This project aims to provide a stable power supply for CMOC’s upcoming capacity expansion.
The Nzilo II hydropower project, with a capacity of 200 MW, is designed to function as a hydro storage battery, integrating solar power during the day and hydropower at night. This innovative “Solar Scheme” will ensure a continuous power supply, crucial for the mining sector.
Located on the Lualaba River, about 40 km north of Kolwezi’s main mining area, Nzilo II will connect to existing high voltage lines. The project will enhance power generation by linking with the existing Nzilo I dam upstream and the Nseke and Busanga dams downstream, providing both base load and peak power for mines, industry, and the local population. Lualaba Power SA is a joint venture under the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s national electricity company, SNEL.
Power shortages have been a significant obstacle to the mining industry’s growth in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, limiting production at mines and smelters. The Nzilo II project is a crucial infrastructure initiative for CMOC to reach its copper production target of 800,000 to 1 million tons by 2028 and become a leading global copper producer. This development will not only secure stable power for CMOC’s operations but also offer a sustainable energy solution for the region’s growing demands.
