The recent heavy rains in Chile’s central-south region have caused disruptions to operations at Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer. Codelco is still assessing the impact of the weather-related stoppages on its operations. At its El Teniente copper mine, some operations are still on hold, specifically in the Sewell and Rojo areas. However, underground operations at El Teniente have been able to continue. The Andina mine, located outside of the capital city of Santiago, resumed its operations on Sunday afternoon, according to Codelco.
The heavy rains resulted in flooding of rivers, the closure of main roadways, and the isolation of several towns in the affected region. Tragically, two people have lost their lives, four individuals remain missing, and more than 13,000 people have been displaced from their homes, as reported by the government. Codelco is actively assessing the extent of the impact on its mining operations and working towards resuming full production as soon as possible.
