Copper Concentrate Takes Center Stage in Botswana’s Mining Growth in Q2 2023

Botswana’s mining sector exhibited an impressive year-on-year growth of 9.9 percent in the second quarter of 2023, primarily fueled by copper. The nation’s Index of Mining Production for Q2 2023 recorded 99.6, marking a significant leap from the 90.6 reported during the same timeframe in 2022.

This revelation comes from the recently published report by Statistics Botswana, titled “Index of the Physical Volume of Mining Production Second Quarter of 2023 Stats Brief”. The report elucidates the primary drivers of the considerable expansion witnessed in the Botswana mining industry.

A Spotlight on Copper

Copper Concentrate showcased remarkable growth, registering a significant surge of 50.9 percent, culminating in a production of 16,027 tonnes during Q2 2023. In comparison, the output was pegged at 10,619 tonnes during the same quarter in the preceding year.

Moreover, the quarter-on-quarter data analysis revealed a notable 7.8 percent upswing from the first quarter of 2023, during which the production volume was 14,872 tonnes.

This robust performance of copper concentrate underscores its pivotal role in Botswana’s mining sector’s commendable growth trajectory.
