Guinea, Africa’s largest producer of bauxite, has recorded a significant increase in both production and export of the aluminum ore for the third consecutive year, according to the latest government data and insights from a senior mines ministry official.
In 2023, the nation’s bauxite production escalated by over 19% year-on-year, reaching approximately 123 million metric tons. Meanwhile, exports saw a more substantial increase, jumping 24.5% to 127 million tons. These figures mark a continued upward trajectory from previous years, with 103 million tons produced and 102 million tons exported in 2022, and 87 million tons produced with 81 million tons exported in 2021.
The surge in production and export volumes is largely attributed to the efforts of Societe Miniere de Boke (SMB)-Winning, Guinea’s leading bauxite producer and exporter. The company has announced plans to invest up to $1 billion over the next five years. This investment aims to enhance its river terminals and acquire additional vessels to boost export capacity even further.
This growth in bauxite production is critical as the ore is refined into alumina, a key component in aluminum products which are increasingly in demand due to the global energy transition. Guinea’s strategic focus on expanding its bauxite production capacity highlights its role as a pivotal player in the international aluminum supply chain.
