Ionic Rare Earths has reached a significant milestone in the development of its Makuutu rare earths project in Uganda, with the completion and commissioning of the Stage 1 technical facilities and pilot plant. Managed by Rwenzori Rare Metals, Ionic’s local Ugandan operating entity, the Makuutu mine is on the cusp of a new era, poised to cater to the burgeoning demand for rare earth elements essential in various high-tech industries.
The pilot plant’s technical equipment installation and commissioning have been finalized, setting the stage for a comprehensive optimization of metallurgical pilot work. This initial phase aims to validate and refine grade control, mine design, material handling, and metallurgical processes. It will also play a crucial role in project financing discussions and the selection of strategic partnerships.
February saw the successful front-end processing of material, including its homogenization, screening, and sizing, laying a vital foundation for the subsequent desorption process. With the main construction project completed, efforts are now being accelerated to expedite the development timeline, bringing the Makuutu project closer to producing Mixed Rare Earth Carbonate (MREC).
Tim Harrison, Chairman of Ionic, expressed satisfaction with the pilot plant’s progress, highlighting the imminent production of the first MRECs within the coming weeks. This achievement underscores Ionic’s commitment to validating its mine development program and preparing MREC samples for marketing negotiations with potential partners.
