Norsk Hydro ASA Produces Recycled Aluminium with Green Hydrogen

Innovative Aluminium Production at Navarra Facility

Norsk Hydro ASA has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable material production by creating recycled aluminium using green hydrogen at its Navarra plant in Spain. This development aligns with the company’s environmental objectives and marks a substantial advancement in material production. The aluminium has undergone rigorous testing, proving its suitability for various applications, including extrusion and fabrication, particularly in electric vehicles.

Partnership with Irizar e-mobility

In early November, Irizar e-mobility, renowned for its production of electric vehicles, placed the inaugural order for aluminium profiles manufactured with this environmentally friendly material. This collaboration highlights the shared commitment of both companies to sustainable innovation. Irizar e-mobility’s dedication to sustainable product development makes it an ideal partner for Hydro’s green hydrogen-produced recycled aluminium.

Significant Environmental Impact and Hydro’s Zero-Emission Goals

Recycling aluminium is highly energy-efficient, requiring only 5% of the energy used in primary aluminium production. By replacing natural gas with green hydrogen, Hydro can eliminate emissions in the production phase, supporting its ambitious ‘roadmap to zero’. This roadmap encompasses recycling initiatives, carbon capture and storage, and the development of zero-emission electrolysis processes.

Use in Electric Vehicle Manufacturing

Irizar e-mobility will incorporate the green hydrogen-produced aluminium profiles into its electric vehicles. This includes the “ie tram,” a zero-emission electric bus designed with the aesthetics of a tram, reflecting an innovative approach to urban transport. The application of this material in electric vehicles aligns with the broader objective of promoting cleaner, more efficient, and accessible transportation options. icon
