Rio Tinto Commits to Renewable Fuel for U.S. Copper Mine Operations

Transition to Eco-Friendly Energy

Rio Tinto, a prominent British mining company, has announced its plan to switch to renewable diesel fuel for its fleet of trucks and heavy machinery at the Kennecott copper mine in the United States, starting in 2024. This transition to renewable fuel, which is produced in the U.S. from bio-based materials, marks a significant step in reducing the environmental impact of the mining operations.

Reduction in Carbon Emissions

The Kennecott Mine, which operates 90 trucks and heavy equipment, anticipates a substantial decrease in direct carbon dioxide emissions (Scope 1) by about 495,000 tons annually. This reduction is equivalent to the emissions generated by over 107,000 passenger vehicles, highlighting the impactful nature of this eco-friendly initiative. icon
