Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphasized the critical importance of lithium extraction in the internal republic of Tuva, which holds the largest deposits of this vital metal in Russia. Speaking at a meeting focused on Tuva’s development, Putin noted that the region accounts for nearly 30% of the country’s lithium resources, positioning it as a key player in Russia’s efforts toward import substitution and technological independence.
“Lithium, found in abundance in Tuva, is essential for producing batteries, electronics, and spare parts,” Putin stated. He stressed that the extraction of lithium is not just a regional concern but a strategic national priority that will significantly impact the success of Russia’s import substitution programs.
Putin called on the meeting’s participants to provide updates on the development prospects of Tuva’s major lithium deposits and to identify any challenges that may require intervention from the federal government.
