The United States has significantly expanded its claims over the resource-rich ocean floor and continental shelf in the Arctic, an area double the size of California. This strategic move, primarily aimed at securing crucial minerals for future technological development, covers approximately 1 million square kilometers in the Arctic and Bering Sea, a region also claimed by Canada and Russia. Additionally, the U.S. has delineated shelf boundaries in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico.

The decision, as per international law, grants the U.S. economic rights to natural resources on and below the seabed within its continental shelf. This area is believed to contain 50 solid minerals, including lithium and tellurium, and 16 rare earth elements.
