Vale Base Metals and Epiroc Canada are partnering to implement cutting-edge technologies aimed at enhancing safety in mining operations. The collaboration focuses on the utilization of Epiroc’s advanced digital and underground technology to minimize human presence in high-risk areas of mines.
The agreement entails the remote operation of Epiroc and mixed fleet OEM (original equipment manufacturer) equipment in hazardous zones. Innovations in electrification, including equipment charging and operational efficiency, are also part of the deal. The companies will explore potential partnerships on new technologies with broader applicability.
The collaboration will apply and adapt Epiroc’s automation, electrification, and digitalization solutions across various underground mining processes. These include long-hole drilling, blasting, face drilling, bolting, mucking, and hauling.
Sarah Hoffman, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Epiroc’s Underground division, expressed enthusiasm about the joint commitment to transform the mining industry. She emphasized the balance of maintaining worker safety and productivity.
Luke Mahony, Interim Chief Technical Officer at Vale Base Metals, highlighted the importance of safety in their operations and the significant role of the partnership in their journey towards enhanced safety measures.
Integrated Remote Operating Center (IROC)
International Mining reported a significant advancement with Vale’s Integrated Remote Operating Center in Sudbury, which oversees five underground mines. The IROC acts as a central monitoring hub, offering real-time feedback and support, thus ensuring safe and efficient operations.
Vale mentioned the IROC’s role in combining proprietary and standard technology for a comprehensive overview of productivity and mine performance. This integration allows real-time troubleshooting and plan adjustments across its Coleman, Copper Cliff, Creighton, Garson, and Totten mines. Improved productivity has been observed since the inception of the remote center.
