Aluminum Metallurg Rus Delays Smelter Modernization Project Completion to 2026

January 22, 2024

Aluminum Metallurg Rus, a key player in Russia's aluminum sector, has announced a revision in the timeline for its smelter modernization project. Initially set to conclude in 2023, the project's completion has now been extended to 2026. This project, which began in 2018, currently stands at 50% completion.

The official statement cites a need to adjust the project's technical and economic parameters as the reason for this postponement. However, there is speculation that the delay may also stem from challenges in acquiring necessary technological equipment. Historically, Russian metallurgical plants, including Aluminum Metallurg Rus, have relied on European suppliers for such equipment. The ongoing geopolitical situation following Russia's military actions in Ukraine has led to a cessation of cooperation with many Russian clients, potentially impacting this project.

In response to these supply chain disruptions, Aluminum Metallurg Rus might be exploring new avenues, possibly turning to suppliers in China to procure the required technology.

The delay in this modernization effort could influence Aluminum Metallurg Rus's ambitions to expand its production of aluminum semi-finished products.

Aluminum Metallurg Rus, previously known as BKMPO, specializes in producing a variety of aluminum products, including flat rolled items, profiles, forgings, and utensils, boasting an annual capacity of over 20,000 tons. The company's history includes ownership changes, having been part of Rusal, then sold to Alcoa, an American corporation, and later acquired by Stupino Titanium Company, led by Nikolai Timokhin.

In early 2023, Rostec announced plans to collaborate with Aluminum Metallurg Rus in establishing a production line for endoprosthesis parts at the Moscow-based Metalist plant. The commencement of this initiative was scheduled for spring 2023, but its current status remains unclear.
