Argentina's inaugural lithium battery plant is set to commence operations in September, utilizing locally extracted metal supplied by Livent Corp, a US-based company, according to mining officials.
The plant, developed by Y-TEC, a subsidiary of Argentine state oil firm YPF, will mark the country's entry into lithium-ion battery cell production. The batteries will rely on lithium carbonate sourced from Livent's extraction operations in northern Argentina.
As the world's fourth largest lithium producer, Argentina, along with Chile and Bolivia, forms part of South America's renowned "lithium triangle," home to the largest reserves of this coveted metal. The country has been actively attracting investment in its lithium industry, and officials hope the new plant will serve as a model for future projects.
Argentina's mining minister, Fernanda Avila, emphasized that the government prioritizes the development of supply chains related to mining activities.
