Ecopro Sets Sights on Secondary Battery Market with 1.2 Trillion Won Investment

March 11, 2024

Ecopro is channeling approximately 1.2 trillion won into its domestic ventures this year, centering on the Pohang Campus, in a bold move to enhance its presence in the secondary battery ecosystem. The investment breakdown includes 690 billion won dedicated to expanding its precursor factory, 320 billion won allocated for the growth of both cathode material and lithium hydroxide factories, and an additional 10 billion won directed towards the production of industrial gases.

This strategic investment is designed to streamline the entire lifecycle of secondary batteries—from recycling spent batteries to the production of key components such as precursors, lithium hydroxide, and cathode materials. Ecopro's initiative is aimed at securing a competitive edge in the future market.

Significant milestones expected in the first half of this year include the completion of Ecopro EM's high-nickel cathode material (NCA) production plant CAM8 and Ecopro Innovation's lithium hydroxide production plant LHM2. Furthermore, Ecopro Materials is set to establish the precursor factory CPM and the RMP 3 and 4 factories, which are crucial for the sulfation process involved in precursor production.

The fruition of these projects will transform the Pohang 4 Campus into a major secondary battery industrial complex, boasting an annual production capacity of 270,000 tons of cathode materials, 110,000 tons of precursors, and 26,000 tons of lithium hydroxide.

With a total of 5.5 trillion won invested in the Pohang Campus since 2020, including this year's investment, Ecopro remains steadfast in its commitment to these ventures. Despite the adversities plaguing the upstream industries, the company's confidence in the market's growth potential and its dedication to timely investment execution underscore its ambitious vision for the future of secondary battery technology.
