EnerSys, a global leader in stored energy solutions for industrial applications, has chosen Greenville, South Carolina, as the location for its new lithium-ion cell gigafactory, aiming to bolster its battery production capabilities in the United States. This strategic move marks a significant investment in the region, with plans to inject $500 million into the project, potentially generating 500 high-quality jobs.
The company is pursuing a comprehensive incentive package valued at approximately $200 million from South Carolina and Greenville County, combining short-term and long-term benefits, alongside leveraging the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) IRC 45X tax benefits and other federal funding opportunities.
The proposed 500,000 square foot manufacturing facility, to be situated on roughly 140 acres within the Augusta Grove business park, represents EnerSys's second operation in South Carolina. It aims to produce various lithium-ion cells for commercial, industrial, and defense applications, with an annual production capacity of four gigawatt-hours (GWh).
David M. Shaffer, EnerSys President & CEO, highlighted Greenville's burgeoning high-tech ecosystem and skilled workforce as key factors in the decision, emphasizing the factory's role in meeting the growing demand for domestically sourced batteries across a wide range of markets.
Governor Henry McMaster and other local officials praised the initiative, noting its transformative potential for the Upstate region and broader economic benefits for South Carolina. The collaboration between EnerSys and local authorities underscores the state's commitment to fostering a pro-business environment and supporting the clean energy transition.
