January 2024 witnessed a significant shift in the dynamics of crude aluminium imports from Russia to European countries, marking a 66% increase over December's figures, as reported by the EU Statistical Service. The total imports amounted to 26,253.2 tonnes, despite being 48% lower than the previous year's figures.
Notably, shipments to certain countries like Germany, Greece, and Poland saw reductions, with Germany importing 510.6 tonnes (a 31% decrease), Greece 225 tonnes (a 79% decrease), and Poland 5,280.1 tonnes (a 5% decrease).
Conversely, other EU nations experienced a notable uptick in their import volumes. Austria's imports skyrocketed by 191% to 1,438 tonnes, Spain's by an impressive 313% to 4,110.4 tonnes, and France doubled its imports with a 104% increase to 5,285 tonnes. Italy and the Netherlands also saw substantial increases of 22% and 117% respectively, with imports totaling 1,797 tonnes and 4,781.5 tonnes.
Additionally, Belgium, Bulgaria, and Hungary resumed their imports of Russian aluminium in January, with volumes reaching 1,000.7 tonnes, 1,777 tonnes, and 47.3 tonnes respectively.
