Global Alumina Output Sees 3.4% Monthly Increase in December

According to data released by the International Aluminium Institute, global alumina production witnessed a 3.4% month-on-month increase in December, reaching a total of 12.3 million tons. The average daily global alumina production also saw a slight uptick, rising from 396,467 tons in November to 396,710 tons in December, according to revised data.

China accounted for a significant portion of the global alumina production, contributing over 58% with an output of 7.1 million tons in December. This marked a 3.4% increase from November, emphasizing China's substantial role in the global alumina market.

In the Oceania region, alumina output experienced a minor decline of 5,000 tons, totaling 1.61 million tons in December. Meanwhile, in Asia (excluding China) and Africa, alumina production rose to 1.22 million tons, up from 1.15 million tons in November. Europe saw an increase in alumina production to 581,000 tons in December from 551,000 tons in November. In South America, alumina output climbed to 1.1 million tons in December compared to 999,000 tons in November.

The data also revealed that global primary aluminium production rose to 6.04 million tons in December, up from 5.85 million tons in November.

Looking at the annual performance, total alumina production for the January-December period experienced a marginal 0.2% decrease, reaching 141.92 million tons compared to 142.23 million tons in the previous year.

As of 1400 IST, the most-active February aluminium contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India showed a 0.5% increase, reaching 204 rupees per kg. Conversely, the three-month futures contract on the London Metal Exchange experienced a 0.8% decrease, settling at $2,256.0 per ton.
