Global alumina production saw a slight increase of 0.9% in July, rising to 12.16 million tons from 12.05 million tons in June, according to the latest data from the International Aluminium Institute. However, this figure represents a marginal 0.1% decrease compared to the same period last year, when production stood at 12.17 million tons.
Despite the overall monthly rise, the average daily global alumina production in July declined to 392,097 tons from 401,633 tons in June.
China, which accounted for nearly 59% of global alumina production in July, saw its output increase by 0.6% to 7.16 million tons, up from 7.12 million tons in June.
In the Oceania region, alumina production climbed to 1.45 million tons in July, compared to 1.33 million tons in June. However, output in Africa and Asia (excluding China) decreased slightly to 1.21 million tons from 1.23 million tons in June. In Europe, production rose to 628,000 tons in July from 620,000 tons in the previous month, while South America experienced a decline in output, falling to 989,000 tons in July from 1.05 million tons in June.
In a related development, global primary aluminium production increased by 3.5% in July, reaching 6.19 million tons, up from 5.98 million tons in June. Despite the rise in production, the most-active August aluminium contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India was down 2% at 227.50 rupees per kg as of 1240 IST, while the three-month futures contract on the London Metal Exchange dropped 0.9% to $2,473.0 per ton.
