Monthly Production Analysis
Global alumina production experienced a modest rise of 2.2% in October, reaching 12.25 million tons, as reported by the International Aluminium Institute. Despite this increase, the average daily production slightly decreased to 395,097 tons compared to 399,967 tons in September.
Regional Output Variations
China continues to dominate global alumina production, contributing over 58% with a total of 7.2 million tons in October, marking a 3.3% increase from September. In contrast, the Oceania region witnessed a decrease in production by 47,000 tons, totaling 1.6 million tons for the month.
In Asia (excluding China) and Africa, alumina production showed an upward trend, reaching 1.17 million tons from September’s 1.15 million tons. Europe saw a slight rise in its output to 554,000 tons in October from 550,000 tons in the previous month. However, South America’s production dipped to 1.01 million tons in October, down from 1.03 million tons in September.
Global Primary Aluminium Production
Alongside alumina, global primary aluminum production also saw an increase, rising to 6.12 million tons in October from 5.92 million tons in September.
Year-to-Date Production Comparison
Considering the period from January to October, total alumina production has seen a slight decrease of 0.5%, totaling 118.22 million tons compared to 118.81 million tons in the same period last year.
Market Response
This production data has influenced market prices. As of 1545 IST, the most-active December aluminum contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India was down by 0.5% at 199.90 rupees per kg. Correspondingly, the three-month futures contract on the London Metal Exchange also fell by 0.2%, standing at $2,213.0 per ton.
