Hindalco Plans $10 Billion Investment in India and US Expansion Projects

August 23, 2024

Hindalco Industries announced a $10 billion investment to fund its ongoing and upcoming expansion projects in India and the United States. Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla shared these plans during the company’s 65th annual general meeting, emphasizing the scope of these developments, which include several major initiatives.

In India, the investments will support the expansion of the Aditya Flat Rolled Products (FRP) plant and the construction of a new alumina refinery in Rayagada, Odisha. The alumina refinery, scheduled for completion in FY27, will have an initial capacity of 850,000 tonnes. Additionally, Hindalco is evaluating a nearly 200,000-tonne expansion at its Aditya Aluminium smelter in Odisha, with a focus on utilizing renewable energy.

In the copper sector, Hindalco aims to increase its smelting capacity. The company is considering establishing a new brownfield facility in Gujarat to meet the growing domestic demand for copper. Moreover, Hindalco is set to commission India’s largest Copper Inner Groove Tube plant at Wagodia, Gujarat, by the end of this year, reducing the need for imports of key air conditioning components.

Novelis, Hindalco’s subsidiary, continues to advance its strategic projects, including the Bay Minette rolling and recycling investment in Alabama, USA. This facility, with a finished goods capacity of 600,000 tonnes, is expected to begin operations in the second half of 2026. Novelis has also started commissioning an advanced automotive recycling center in North America and has announced an expansion of its used beverage can (UBC) recycling operations in the UK.

Despite significant debt repayments amounting to Rs 5,195 crore in its India operations, Hindalco maintains a strong financial position, ensuring its ability to fund these extensive growth plans. This financial strength underpins the company’s strategy to expand its global production capabilities across key markets.
