Aluminium Busbars Enter Series Production

Linz-based HPW Metallwerk has announced the commencement of series production for its new generation of aluminium busbars. This product, characterized by its patent-protected design, is set to bring significant efficiency gains to the e-mobility sector.

Prior to launching full-scale production, HPW Metallwerk engaged in extensive customer sampling to refine the product. The company has successfully transitioned its production processes from copper to aluminium, gearing up for the production of thousands of tonnes in the medium term. With sales projected in the double-digit million euro range, HPW is poised to make a significant impact in the market.

Aluminium busbars offer substantial benefits over traditional copper wires, particularly in terms of weight. These busbars are up to 50% lighter than conventional flat conductors while maintaining the same level of electrical conductivity. This reduction in weight is crucial for high-performance vehicles and battery-electric heavy-duty transport, making aluminium busbars a key component for the next wave of automotive innovation.

High Demand and Production Expansion

The demand for HPW’s aluminium busbars has been robust, with well-known Tier 1 suppliers already planning to incorporate them into e-mobility applications. HPW Metallwerk is not only ramping up production at its Leonding site in Austria but also anticipates future production in the USA.

Dr. Ewald Koppensteiner, CEO of HPW, expressed optimism about the new product line: "The launch of our new high-tech wire generation marks a great start to the year. The interest from potential customers reaffirms our market position as an innovator in the e-mobility sector."
