Opening of Cassopolis Plant and Production Goals

Hydro has inaugurated its aluminium recycling facility in Cassopolis, Michigan. The plant, which represents an investment of USD 150 million, aims to produce 120,000 metric tonnes of recycled aluminium annually. This move enhances Hydro's position in the North American low-carbon aluminium market.

Hydro CIRCAL Production and Environmental Impact

The Cassopolis facility focuses on producing Hydro CIRCAL, comprising at least 75 percent post-consumer aluminium scrap. This product, certified by DNV GL, has a CO2 footprint of 2.3 kg CO2e per kg aluminium or less.

Diverse Market Applications

The plant's output will serve various sectors including automotive, transportation, building, construction, and consumer goods. Initially focusing on non-automotive clients, the facility plans to supply the automotive industry after completing necessary qualification trials.

Expansion of U.S. Recycling Operations

The Cassopolis site is Hydro's third greenfield recycling plant in the U.S. and its first dedicated to producing Hydro CIRCAL. Prior to this facility becoming operational, Hydro had been supplying CIRCAL from its other U.S. locations.

Aluminium's Role in Vehicle Lightweighting

Aluminium's properties like strength, corrosion resistance, and lightweight make it a valuable material for reducing vehicle weight. This is particularly relevant for electric and hybrid vehicles, where lightweighting can offset the added weight of batteries.
