Nittetsu Mining has entered into a significant partnership with London-based multinational mining company Anglo American. The two entities have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at fostering collaboration in commercial ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and technical initiatives to enhance sustainability and transparency across the copper value chain.

This collaboration builds on the long-standing relationship between Nittetsu and Anglo American, rooted in their respective copper smelting operations in Japan and copper mining activities in Chile. As global efforts intensify to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with vehicle electrification at the forefront, the demand for copper is expected to surge. Both companies acknowledge the necessity of ensuring responsibly sourced raw materials in response to this growing demand.

The memorandum of understanding represents a commitment from both parties to share information on decarbonization technologies pertinent to their copper mining operations and to establish a sustainable supply system leveraging their comprehensive portfolios. Additionally, Anglo American will share insights and best practices towards achieving recognized responsible mining standards, a goal Nittetsu aspires to for its mining operations.

Reiichi Morikawa, Representative Director and President of Nittetsu, expressed the company's dedication to expanding and strengthening its metals business. Nittetsu aims to meet market demands by promoting a circular economy and striving for carbon neutrality in its copper-related operations. Morikawa emphasized the company's commitment to addressing social responsibility concerns related to copper supply, aligning with Nittetsu's management policy of contributing to the creation of a prosperous future society.

Matt Walker, CEO of Anglo American's Marketing business, highlighted the importance of collaboration and responsible resource stewardship in enhancing the sustainability credentials of the industry. He commended Nittetsu's efforts to pursue a recognized responsible mining standard for its operations and expressed enthusiasm for learning from Anglo American's experiences in Chile. Walker views the agreement as a step towards addressing current challenges while laying the foundation for a sustainable future.
