The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has endorsed the partnership between the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) and Mytilineos for the development of the Nyinahin bauxite resources and the construction of a refinery, marking a significant move towards establishing an Integrated Aluminium Industry in Ghana.
During a meeting at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, the Asantehene expressed his support for the initiative, highlighting its potential to stop the export of raw bauxite and start refining alumina within Ghana. This transition is expected to provide employment opportunities for the youth and contribute to the country's industrialization efforts.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II called on Mytilineos to engage and train local communities, particularly in mining areas, to ensure inclusive growth. He also emphasized the importance of conducting operations responsibly and safely, promising his and his sub-chiefs' support for the successful completion of Project 3A.
GIADEC's CEO, Mr. Michael Ansah, thanked Otumfuo for his ongoing support for the Integrated Aluminium Industry projects, especially those in the Ashanti region. Ansah reiterated GIADEC's commitment to developing the full bauxite value chain and establishing a comprehensive aluminium industry in Ghana, in line with global standards of environmental sustainability and governance.
Mytilineos was chosen through a competitive process initiated by GIADEC in 2019, which drew interest from around 40 global companies. The project aligns with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's vision for GIADEC as a pivotal player in enhancing Ghana's economic prosperity.
Dimitrios Kakarouchas, Administrative Director of Mytilineos, expressed gratitude to the Asantehene for his backing and outlined the company's immediate plans to begin prospecting and Mineral Resource Estimates to quantify the bauxite resources. Mytilineos pledged to prioritize environmental sustainability and social responsibility, aligning with its track record in Ghana's energy sector and its commitment to creating over 1,500 job opportunities while preserving the region's natural environment for future generations.
This partnership between GIADEC and Mytilineos signifies a forward step in utilizing Ghana's bauxite resources responsibly, aiming to make a lasting positive impact on the economy and local communities.
