Spain Competes for Umicore’s €1 Billion Plant

January 29, 2024

In the evolving landscape of electromobility, Spain aims to secure its position as a European hub, eyeing a significant investment from Belgian group Umicore. The multinational is contemplating the establishment of a pre-cathode (pCAM) factory in Europe, with Gijón, located in Asturias, emerging as a strong contender among potential locations.

As the automotive industry shifts towards zero-emission mobility, carmakers are adapting by electrifying existing plants and establishing gigafactories for battery production. The surge in demand for electric vehicles has prompted a second phase, focusing on battery components, including crucial elements like the cathode.

Umicore, a recycling giant, is considering Spain for its expansion in pre-cathode production. Gijón is competing with other European locations such as Dunkirk in France and locations in Finland. The Asturias city stands out for its excellent logistics and port services, offering a compelling case for Umicore's investment.

While Umicore already has cathode factories in multiple countries, it inaugurated its first European cathode plant in Poland in 2022. Spain's appeal is further strengthened by Umicore's joint venture with Volkswagen, known as Ionway, with a target production capacity of 160 GWh per year. Gijón, if selected, could become a key supplier for Volkswagen's gigafactory in Sagunto, Valencia.

The potential project in Gijón involves an investment exceeding €1 billion. Umicore has initiated the initial bureaucratic steps, seeking permits for a potential factory installation at the Port of Gijón. Spain's commitment to securing this investment was demonstrated at the Davos Forum, where the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Enterprise, Carlos Cuerpo, met with Umicore's CEO, Mathias Miedreich, signaling the country's proactive approach to promoting this significant investment.
