Sparkz Plans $1 Billion EV Battery Plant in Rancho Cordova
Sparkz, a manufacturer of electric vehicle batteries, is discussing the potential establishment of a new battery production facility at the former Aerojet Rocketdyne headquarters in Rancho Cordova. The California Energy Commission is reviewing the possible transfer of two grants, totaling $15.2 million, originally allocated for a manufacturing plant in Livermore, to this new location. The change in site is subject to a review due to its implications on job creation and community impact.
Sacramento County Planning officials have approved the proposed location for the plant, which is expected to span approximately 850,000 square feet and create 850 to 1,000 jobs. The plan, still in negotiation stages, includes Sparkz's intent to invest $1 billion in transforming the site into a battery manufacturing hub. The timeline for the project and potential partnerships with vehicle manufacturers have not been disclosed. The relocation of Sparkz's planned facility represents a significant development in the region's industrial landscape, previously dominated by Aerojet Rocketdyne.
