Belgorod State National Research University Advances Aluminium Alloy Production

February 13, 2024

Belgorod State National Research University (BelSU) has developed a new technology that aims to enhance the production process of high-quality aluminium alloys, striving towards improving efficiency and quality for critical sectors like aerospace and shipbuilding.

The method innovated by BelSU researchers involves the dissolution of refractory metals into superheated aluminium melts. This process incorporates the addition of refractory metal ligatures into aluminium before heating it to temperatures ranging from 1000-1100°C. The mixture is then stirred every 15-20 minutes until cooling, ensuring a uniform alloy.

The technology offers notable improvements over traditional methods, primarily in the quality of the resulting alloy. It addresses the issue of incomplete dissolution of refractory metals, which can affect the alloy's mechanical and corrosion resistance properties. By eliminating intermetallic inclusions and oxides, the technology produces a superior alloy. Additionally, it reduces smelting time by 20-50%, decreasing production costs and increasing output.

These advancements are particularly significant for the transport industry, where materials combining lightness and strength are crucial. The aerospace and shipbuilding industries, where material performance directly impacts vehicle efficiency and safety, are expected to benefit greatly.
