European Imports of Russian Titanium Nearly Double in January 2024
In a notable surge, European countries imported 494.9 tonnes of Russian titanium in January 2024, marking a 92% increase from December, despite being 15.5% lower than the previous year's figures, according to the European Union's statistical service. This increase reflects significant growth in imports by several key countries, including Germany, which received 237 tonnes of titanium from Russia, marking a substantial increase from 62.9 tonnes in the previous month.
France and Italy also saw significant upticks in their imports, with France importing 146.6 tonnes (a 20% increase from December) and Italy's imports jumping to 52.5 tonnes, representing a remarkable 205% increase. The Netherlands and Belgium demonstrated growth as well, with imports reaching 47 tonnes and 5.2 tonnes, respectively. Spain, however, experienced a decrease, importing 5.1 tonnes of titanium, a 66% drop from its previous figures.
In addition to titanium, European countries ramped up their imports of Russian ferrotitanium in January 2024 to 750.6 tonnes, showing a 20% increase from December and a 1.4% rise year-over-year. The average price for ferrotitanium stood at €3 per kg. Notably, ferrotitanium shipments to Germany decreased to 42 tonnes from 130.6 tonnes in the previous month. However, Estonia and the Netherlands saw substantial growth in their imports, with Estonia receiving 468 tonnes (a 38% increase) and the Netherlands 240.6 tonnes (a 180% increase).
