Boliden Reportedly Eyeing Purchase of Sweden’s Zinkgruvan Mine from Lundin Mining

September 16, 2024

Swedish mining company Boliden is reportedly in discussions to acquire the Zinkgruvan mine, located in Askersund municipality, from Lundin Mining, according to a report by Dagens industri. This comes after Lundin Mining's CEO, Jack Lundin, confirmed earlier this week that the company is looking to sell its European assets, including the Neves Corvo zinc and copper mine in Portugal and Zinkgruvan in Sweden. Lundin hopes to complete the sale of these assets within the next 6 to 12 months.

Insiders with knowledge of the mining sector suggest that Boliden is one of the key players in the talks to acquire Zinkgruvan. Boliden, one of the world’s largest zinc producers, has a strong focus on the Nordic region, with the Tara mine in Ireland as its only holding outside the Nordics.

Despite the rumors, Boliden’s CEO, Mikael Staffas, has not commented on the company's potential interest in Zinkgruvan.
