Global Aluminium Producers Raise Premiums for Japanese Buyers for Q3 Shipments

June 18, 2024

Global aluminium producers have proposed premiums of $185 to $190 per metric ton for primary metal shipments to Japanese buyers for the July-September quarter. This represents a 25% to 31% increase from the current quarter, according to sources involved in the quarterly pricing negotiations.

Japan, a significant Asian importer of aluminium, sets the benchmark for the region's premiums based on the prices it agrees to pay over the London Metal Exchange (LME) cash price each quarter.

For the April-June quarter, Japanese buyers had agreed to a premium of $145-$148 per ton, which was an increase of 61% to 64% from the previous quarter.
