Norsk Hydro Launches Advanced Aluminum Scrap Sorting Operation in Michigan

Norwegian aluminum producer Norsk Hydro announced on September 25 that it has begun operations at an advanced aluminum scrap sorting facility in Michigan, USA, through its joint venture, Alsort. The facility, which uses proprietary sorting technology, is expected to provide Hydro with a stable supply of raw materials for the production of low-carbon aluminum products.

Alsort, a 50-50 joint venture between Hydro and scrap management company Padnos, was established to ensure the availability of high-quality recycled aluminum for Hydro's low-carbon product lines. The new sorting machine, referred to as a high sorting machine, is capable of processing up to 20,000 tons of aluminum scrap annually.

Norsk Hydro has also developed a material called Hydro Sercal, which is primarily composed of aluminum scrap. The company produces products with scrap content ranging from 75% to 100%, aiming to meet the growing demand for low-carbon aluminum solutions.
