BHP and Liebherr Strengthen Collaboration with New Global Framework Agreement
BHP, a leading global resources company, and Liebherr, a pioneer in mining equipment, have signed a new Global Framework Agreement (GFA) at MINExpo 2024 in Las Vegas. The agreement builds on over two decades of partnership, focusing on advancing mining technology and sustainability.
The GFA seeks to enhance BHP's mining operations by incorporating Liebherr’s innovations in heavy machinery. The collaboration emphasizes improvements in operational efficiency, safety, automation, digitalization, and electrification, aligning with BHP's goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Liebherr’s executive vice president, Dr. Jörg Lukowski, expressed enthusiasm for the ongoing partnership, highlighting its role in driving both operational improvements and sustainable practices. He noted that the agreement reflects their shared vision for the future of mining, with a focus on automation and electrification.
The collaboration has already seen significant milestones, including the deployment of Liebherr’s ultra-class excavators, such as the R 9600 Generation 8, across BHP’s assets. In early 2024, BHP took delivery of its first fully electric Liebherr R 9400 E excavator at its Yandi mine, further underscoring the push towards electrification in mining operations.
BHP’s chief commercial officer, Ragnar Udd, emphasized the renewed commitment between the two companies, noting that the partnership is aimed at shaping the future of mining with a focus on safety, productivity, and sustainability.
