Aurubis is on course to inaugurate its new copper recycling plant in the United States, situated in Georgia, by the end of December. The company’s CEO outlined the plan during the World Copper Conference in Santiago on Wednesday, which is aligned with a broader strategy to expand copper production and processing capabilities in North America.
The $700 million facility has garnered support from President Joe Biden’s administration, reflecting a growing focus on recycling and sustainable metal production. With an initial annual capacity set at 90,000 metric tons, plans are in place to double this output to 180,000 metric tons during the plant’s second development phase.
The CEO, Roland Harings, highlighted the significance of the plant, noting, “We are finalizing the installation now of a first-of-its-kind recycling facility in the US. It’s very significant and it has room for growth.” This development signals a notable shift towards increased recycling capacity within the industry, underscoring a commitment to eco-friendly production practices.
