Canadian Government Grants Airbus Permit for Titanium Imports from Sanctioned Russian Firm

April 25, 2024

Airbus Canada has received a special authorization from the Canadian government to continue using titanium supplied by VSMPO-AVISMA, the world's largest producer of titanium and titanium alloys, despite recent sanctions against the Russian firm. The exact duration of these authorizations remains unspecified by Airbus Canada.

The decision comes as a significant relief for Airbus, as it ensures the continued operation of its local manufacturing plants without disruption. This move is particularly crucial given Canada's earlier sanctions on VSMPO-AVISMA in February 2024 and similar export restrictions imposed by the United States in September of the previous year. Prior to the sanctions, Airbus had anticipated phasing out Russian titanium within months.VSMPO-AVISMA is integral to the aerospace industry, conducting a full technological cycle from processing raw titanium to producing finished products.

As of early 2022, the corporation boasted partnerships with over 450 companies across 50 countries. The Canadian exemption is aimed at mitigating any potential impact on Airbus' operations that might arise from the country's ban on imports of its European-made aircraft, which rely heavily on VSMPO-AVISMA's titanium supplies.
