Copper Market Enthusiasm Unabated, According to Surly Henderson Investments’ Expert

May 7, 2024

Daniel Sullivan, the head of global natural resources at Surly Henderson Investments, expresses strong optimism for the copper market amidst its pivotal role in the electrification transition. “Let's face it. Copper is the darling of the market this year,” Sullivan states, emphasizing the widespread bullish sentiment among investors.

Sullivan highlights that more than 15% of his fund's investments are directly placed in copper, with additional stakes in diversified mining giants such as BHP and Rio Tinto. He suggests that the proportion of investments in copper may increase, as he views it as the premier option in the current market landscape, stating confidently, "There is no better option than copper.

"Despite potential challenges, including the possibility of manufacturers substituting copper with aluminum due to high prices, Sullivan remains unfazed. He anticipates fluctuations in the copper market, cautioning that the upward trajectory might not be smooth. “It's not going to be a one-way swing,” he noted, adding that concerns about supply shortages do not preclude temporary price declines before a potential doubling. Sullivan’s insights reflect a calculated optimism, acknowledging both the opportunities and hurdles in the path of copper’s market dominance.
