According to the International Aluminium Institute, global alumina production experienced a marginal decline of 0.2% in January 2024, totaling 12.05 million tonnes, down from 12.08 million tonnes in December 2023. However, compared to the same period last year, production saw a 3.9% increase from 11.6 million tonnes.
China, maintaining its position as the leading contributor, accounted for nearly 57% of the global output with 6.85 million tonnes, though this represented a slight decrease of 0.3% from December. Meanwhile, production in the Oceania region increased slightly, while Asia (excluding China) and Africa saw a minor drop. Europe’s output experienced growth, contrasting with a decrease in South America’s production.
The report also highlighted a 0.1% dip in global primary aluminium production in January 2024. In market movements, the most active March aluminium contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India slightly rose, as did the three-month futures contract on the London Metal Exchange.
