LS Cable & System Innovates with New Copper Foil Plant in Gunsan

In a move to revolutionize the production of high-performance batteries, South Korea’s LS Cable & System has announced the commencement of construction for a state-of-the-art plant dedicated to manufacturing a novel copper foil material. Dubbed “CuFlake,” this innovative material utilizes copper flakes, setting a new industry standard by streamlining the manufacturing process and significantly cutting costs.

Copper foils serve as critical components in the fabrication of batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems, prized for their outstanding conductivity. The traditional production process, reliant on copper wires, involves multiple stages including cutting and washing, each adding to the overall cost and complexity. CuFlake’s revolutionary approach eliminates these steps, offering a more efficient and cost-effective solution.

Located in an industrial complex in Gunsan, a southwestern port city in North Jeolla Province, the plant spans the size of a football field. This ambitious project, spearheaded by LS Cable’s subsidiary Korea Future Materials in collaboration with local authorities, is poised to become operational by December 2024.

Korea Future Materials CEO Lee Sang-ho emphasized the significance of the Gunsan facility, stating, “We will be able to establish a stable supply chain for high-quality copper foil material through the construction of the Gunsan plant.” He further expressed the company’s commitment to broadening its production capabilities to include eco-friendly components, such as rare-earth magnets and aluminum parts for EVs, marking a significant step towards sustainable manufacturing practices. icon
