ABB Partners with Boliden to Promote Sustainability Using Low-Carbon Zinc

ABB has announced a partnership with Swedish mining company Boliden to advance sustainability in power distribution systems by utilizing Low-Carbon Zinc. This zinc has a carbon footprint 75% lower than the industry average, playing a crucial role in supporting a circular economy and promoting a fossil-free society.

Boliden, supported by ABB's electrification solutions, uses renewable energy to optimize its zinc production process, reducing emissions to just 1.0 kg of CO2 per kilogram of metal produced. This Low-Carbon Zinc is used for galvanizing steel, which helps protect structures from corrosion and can extend their lifespan by up to 100 years. ABB is now incorporating Boliden's Low-Carbon Zinc in products like Kabeldon power distribution cabinets, contributing to infrastructure with a reduced environmental footprint.

Massimiliano Cifalitti, President of ABB Smart Power, emphasized that the partnership advances cleaner and more efficient industrial practices. Daniel Asplund, Zinc Sales Manager at Boliden, highlighted the shared commitment of both companies to reducing climate impact and ensuring responsibility throughout the value chain.

ABB aims to align 80% of its products with its Circularity Approach by 2030, offering more sustainable options, including the use of low-carbon materials. This collaboration underscores ABB's dedication to the energy transition and its vision for a sustainable, circular economy.
