September 2, 2024

USA-based Novelis has filed a patent application for innovative processes involving cast aluminum alloys that include calcium. The inventors behind this patent are Wagstaff Robert Bruce, Wagstaff Samuel Robert, Sundaram Kumar, Morais Carlos R, and Barker Simon William.

The patent application, filed on June 23, 2023, is designated under the application number 202317042062 A. The relevant international classification numbers for this patent are C22C 21/06, C22C 21/08, C22C 1/02, and C22F 1/047.

According to the abstract published by the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks, the patent describes processes for the continuous casting of aluminum alloys. These alloys are either originally composed of or modified to include magnesium (Mg). The novel aspect of the process involves adding calcium (Ca) to the molten aluminum alloy before casting, which helps reduce surface defects and exudates in the cast aluminum products.

The patent was officially published in Issue No. 31/2024 of the Patent Office Journal on August 2, 2024.
