Rusal to Implement Import Substitution Program for Automation Systems at Smelters

June 21, 2024

Rusal has announced a comprehensive import substitution program for automation systems at its aluminum and alumina smelters, slated to run until 2031. This initiative aims to replace controller equipment and software, enhancing the capabilities of Russian manufacturers in process automation.

Currently, the replacement of controller equipment and software is underway at six process sites, with projects at 20 more sites set to commence by the end of 2024. The overall cost of the import substitution program is estimated at around 20 billion rubles, with potential increases as the program progresses. This scale of project is unprecedented for domestic developers of controller equipment and software, providing a significant opportunity for Russian manufacturers to invest in production expansion and develop new competencies, thereby boosting their global competitiveness.

Mikhail Grinishin, Director of Production Automation at Rusal Engineering and Technology Center, emphasized the critical role of digital control systems in modern technological processes. "Replacing the control system requires a particularly responsible approach," Grinishin said. "High requirements for reliability, stability, and quality of control necessitate thorough multi-stage tests of new solutions in real production conditions."

Russian controller equipment and software have already been tested at the Krasnoyarsk Aluminum Smelter. The next phase of testing will soon commence at the expanded pilot site of the Sayanogorsk Aluminum Smelter.
