Queensland Approves New Copper and Gold Mine Near Cloncurry
The Queensland Government has approved a new copper and gold mine near Cloncurry, expected to create hundreds of construction and mining jobs. Copper production is set to exceed 20,000 tonnes annually following AIC Mines' acquisition of the mining lease for the Jericho mine.
The Jericho development will also enable expanded operations at the nearby Eloise Copper Mine, extending its life by another 10 years. Gold production is projected to increase to 10,000 ounces per year. AIC Mines' managing director praised his team for securing the mining lease approval just 15 months after acquiring the Jericho copper deposit.
The Jericho Mining Lease is a significant milestone, paving the way to expand annual production at Eloise to over 20,000 tonnes of copper and 10,000 ounces of gold in concentrate. The project will employ 150 people over a 24-month construction period and create 100 new permanent jobs once in production. AIC Mines emphasizes the increasing global demand for copper as part of the transition away from fossil fuels, highlighting Queensland's favorable operating conditions, infrastructure, and skilled workforce.
In a related development, North West Phosphate has received approval for the Paradise South mine, 130 kilometers northwest of Mount Isa. This project is expected to create about 450 jobs during construction and operation.
Queensland Resources Minister Scott Stewart commented on the broader impact, stating that the North West Minerals Province continues to provide significant employment opportunities and critical minerals essential for renewable energy. He noted that the new project will boost local and international copper supply for solar, wind, and battery energy manufacturing, benefiting areas like Townsville as part of the critical minerals supply chain.
Meanwhile, an incident at the Eloise Mine on May 18 has led to a partial suspension of mining and processing operations. An underground loader lost control and became stuck, but the operator was safely rescued and transported to Cloncurry Hospital in stable condition with no major injuries. Operations were briefly halted during the emergency response but have since partially resumed.
