Iran’s Aluminum Production Reaches Over 400,000 Tons in Eight Months
Iran produced 400,425 tons of aluminum ingots between March 20 and November 20, 2024, according to the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO). This marks significant progress for the country’s aluminum sector, which plays a pivotal role in supporting downstream industries such as automotive manufacturing, construction, and packaging.
IMIDRO, a major state-owned entity in Iran’s mining sector, highlighted the contributions of its four leading producers during this period. South Aluminum Corporation (SALCO) led production with 162,459 tons, followed by Iranian Aluminum Company (IRALCO) at 115,624 tons, Almahdi Aluminum Company at 99,954 tons, and Iran Alumina Company with 22,388 tons of aluminum ingots.
The report also noted increased production of key materials by Iran Alumina Company. The company produced 159,416 tons of alumina powder (a 5% year-on-year increase), 269,145 tons of aluminum hydrate (up 5%), and 514,420 tons of bauxite (a 41% rise).
Aluminum is considered a strategic metal globally, essential for high-tech industries and infrastructure development. Iran, ranked as the world’s 18th largest aluminum producer, has set ambitious targets for further growth in this sector. The country’s aluminum output surpassed 635,000 tons in the previous Iranian calendar year, showing resilience despite energy constraints that have impacted the industry.
Iranian officials estimate the value of the domestic aluminum sector at $22 billion, sufficient to meet national demand. Plans to expand aluminum ingot production facilities further emphasize the strategic importance of this industry for Iran’s economic development, job creation, and foreign currency generation.
