Japan’s Aluminium Premium Rises for Third Consecutive Quarter

October 9, 2024

The premium for aluminium shipments to Japanese buyers for the October to December period has been set at $175 per metric ton, reflecting a 1.7% increase from the previous quarter, according to four individuals directly involved in pricing talks. This rise aligns with higher premiums seen in Europe.

The new figure surpasses the $172 per ton premium paid between July and September and marks the third consecutive quarterly increase. However, it remains below the initial offers of $180 to $185 per ton made by global producers.

Japan, a major importer of aluminium, sets the benchmark premium for primary metal shipments across Asia each quarter, based on the London Metal Exchange (LME) cash price.
