Century Lithium Achieves 99.5% Battery-Grade Lithium Carbonate at Nevada Pilot Plant

September 24, 2024

Century Lithium announced successful production of battery-grade lithium carbonate at its Lithium Extraction Facility in Amargosa Valley, Nevada, part of the company’s Angel Island project. Assays from the second batch of lithium carbonate processed at the facility revealed a purity level of 99.5%, meeting battery-grade standards.

CEO Bill Willoughby expressed satisfaction with the Pilot Plant team’s progress, stating, "These results demonstrate the advancements we’ve made in refining our lithium extraction process. With the capability to produce lithium carbonate onsite, the Pilot Plant now more closely replicates full-scale production and allows us to provide samples to potential partners and end-users for testing."

The second batch followed the same procedures as the first batch, processing two 40-liter lots of concentrated lithium solution from the facility's Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) area. The process involved precipitating lithium carbonate using sodium carbonate, followed by washing and drying, resulting in 4 kilograms of lithium carbonate from each lot. The purity improved to 99.5% after addressing a mechanical issue, with reductions in impurities such as sodium and calcium.
