E3 Lithium Partners with Pure Lithium to Develop Lithium Metal Battery Pilot Plant in Alberta

August 20, 2024

E3 Lithium has signed a Joint Development Agreement with Pure Lithium Corporation, a Boston-based company known for its innovative lithium metal battery technology. This collaboration aims to advance the design and construction of a lithium metal anode and battery pilot plant in Alberta, Canada. The partnership will also include a Preliminary Economic Assessment of a commercial lithium metal battery facility that leverages Pure Lithium's patented Brine to Battery™ technology in conjunction with E3's extensive lithium brine resources.

This joint initiative follows the successful production of a lithium metal battery by Pure Lithium using E3's lithium concentrate, which was announced in June 2022. Over the past two years, the companies have collaborated to produce lithium metal cells with higher energy density than conventional lithium-ion batteries, while also eliminating the use of nickel, cobalt, and graphite.

The Development Agreement outlines the next 12 months of collaboration, focusing on creating a techno-economic model, scaling up efforts, and designing a lithium metal anode and battery pilot facility near Calgary. This pilot facility will use lithium concentrate from E3 and is expected to produce 200kg of lithium metal anodes, which will be used in lithium metal vanadium rechargeable batteries.

E3 and Pure Lithium will assess the technical and economic viability of a commercial lithium metal battery facility adjacent to E3's lithium production site in Alberta. The project aims to simplify the lithium production process by integrating E3's Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) flow sheet with Pure Lithium's electrodeposition technology, potentially leading to low-cost, sustainable batteries.

Chris Doornbos, CEO of E3 Lithium, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing the potential to deliver industry-leading, sustainable batteries. Emilie Bodoin, Founder and CEO of Pure Lithium, highlighted the importance of securing a reliable lithium supply and praised the ongoing collaboration with E3 as they move towards commercial-scale production.
